Evolutionary Gene Tree & Gene Age Browser
Trace the deepest taxonomic group in which each of the 20,010 human genes appears across 6 kingdoms and 29 taxonomic groups.
Unpacking the catalog and counting matches in each clade.
Classify by earliest catalog match
Choose the evidence used to assign each gene to a stratum.
These are estimates from observed catalog matches, not dated gene origins. Missing matches can reflect gene loss, sequence divergence, or incomplete coverage. A clade qualifies when its combined species count reaches the threshold; the human reference is excluded from classification. With thresholds above one, the last stratum also includes genes with non-human matches below the threshold.
Primates are identified by their scientific-name genus within Mammals. The additional stratum separates qualifying primate matches when non-primate mammals do not reach the threshold.
Evolutionary strata
Oldest qualifying clade → most restricted matches. Select a stratum to inspect its genes.
Bar heights show gene counts. Tau measures tissue specificity from 0 (broad expression) to 1 (restricted expression). Organ breadth counts expressed organ systems out of 16. The display is an ordered classification, not a scaled time axis or a resolved species tree.
Filter the gene catalog
Presence across 29 taxonomic groups
Coverage is matched gene–species pairs divided by all possible pairs for the filtered genes and the species in that group. Mammals include the human reference. Group order is a broad taxonomic arrangement; neighboring rows do not imply direct ancestry.

Organ expression by gene stratum
Counts are within the current filters. Select an organ to filter genes.
Age profiles use all catalog genes expressed in each organ; a gene may appear in several organs.

GO function by gene stratum
Counts are within the current filters. Select a function to filter genes.
Age profiles use every catalog gene annotated to each function; GO categories overlap.

Catalog version . Match strength describes catalog confidence, not identity of function. Strong calls may be high-confidence or supported by multiple sources; they are not all proven one-to-one orthologs. View the source catalog.
